New Art Video: The Comforting Flame

Just finished painting "The Comforting Flame," my take of a modern version of Hestia. The model is my very beautiful friend Amanda Winstead who so graciously sat for me.

This painting was a fun challenge for me. The strange use of light caused by the flame did interesting things to the colors. The model didn't actually sit in front of a blazing fire. Instead, I created the effect after-the-fact through playing with lit paper and how the flame looked where the model sat.

My inner pyromaniac really enjoyed himself!

I'd love to hear what you think about the video. Check it out below...

  1. I really enjoyed the video and love to see the process of painting. Oil painting is done so differently than watercolor so it was especially interesting to view it since it's a mystery to me! How long were you filmed doing actually painting?

  2. The whole thing took me about 15 hours. Maybe a little longer. Not too bad.

  3. OK, a couple comments:
1.) Was that 15 hours condensed into 5 minutes, or are you really, REALLY fast and too modest to say?
2.) I think this is the first time I've ever watched a piece of art created like that and seeing your process and the canvas come to life was amazing!
3.) You made that canvas POP!!!
4.) Peter Murphy? Seriously? Excellent choice!!!!!!
5.) Watching gave me an idea for a challenge for you-- kinda strange, but I'm wondering what Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop," would inspire you to create? Maybe you could do a series of obscure '80's music and the works they inspire you to create.....

  4. 1. Well, perhaps a little faster than 15 hours, but not much. Roughly 12-15, I guess, not including the planning stages (those took forever)
    2. Thanks!
    3. Double thanks!!
    4. Love that song. Don't think a lot of people (at least in my circles) know much about him.
    5. I have thought of that idea before too! I think it would be a lot of fun. And the more obscure the better! Look for it, probably starting with the obscure "House of Stone and LIght" (though, that may be more 90's)
